Volunteer for the RAW - We need your help!!!!

Get Into the Raw - Volunteer with at the 12th annual Riverdale Art Walk

Are you looking for opportunities to contribute to a large-scale exhibition? Since 1998, the Artists’ Network of Riverdale has presented the Riverdale Art Walk, a juried, multiple-site, fine art exhibition. Over 2 days, the RAW features 100+ artists, drawing crowds of more than 10,000. RAW 2010 takes place on June 5 & 6, from 11am to 6pm in galleries, retail stores, studios and in Jimmie Simpson Park along Queen St East.

The RAW would not be possible without the devoted work of our volunteers so come on out and get involved!  Volunteering is a great way to meet people and get involved in visual arts community.

There are many ways you can volunteer your time and your skills to the RAW:

Volunteer before the RAW:

Help to put together artists packages
Become part of a committee that arranges the pre-RAW party at the Dominion on Queen
Liaising with stores that will be exhibiting artwork on Queen and Carlaw

Volunteer during the RAW, June 5 & 6:

Artist Support: Give exhibiting artists a chance grab some lunch! Tasks include greeting visitors to artist tents, handing out cards/artists’ statements, and providing sales information.
Info Booth: Social butterfly? Help out at our Artists’ Network tent by welcoming visitors, and providing information.
Operations: Like to roll up your sleeves? Help with tent and booth set-up, signage and balloon installation, and taking it all down.
Traffic Marshalling: Assist with artist load-in and load-out at Jimmie Simpson Park.
Documentation: Volunteer your skills by taking photographs of various exhibition sites.
Monitor and Runner: Have cell phone, will travel? Visit retail and park exhibitors/venues, and report any trouble spots.
Artist Liaison: Welcome artists to their exhibition sites in Jimmie Simpson Park, distribute and collect artists’ surveys, and check-in intermittently.
Office Shuffle: Provide admin support to our small hard-working office team Tuesday to Friday, during office hours. Tasks include data entry, mailing, filing, organizing, etc. Distribution: Help distribute the RAW catalogue and postcards to various locations
Please let us know if you have a special skill (ie: media relations) you would be willing to offer!

What do you get out of Volunteering for the RAW?:
Something to put on your CV.
Feeling that you have done something for your local community.
The experience of working in a wonderful team putting together the RAW.
Our gratitude.

Information for artists

RAW Information

Show Dates: June 5 & 6, 2010, 11am - 6pm

Hello Artists!

Thank you for a successful 2009 Riverdale Art Walk! Please join us again for the 12th annual show, June 5th & 6th 2010. Submission form and information is available now. Deadline extended to March 12th, 2010.

Frequently Asked Questions about the RAW.

1.      Q. How do I find a retail space to exhibit at if I am not showing at Jimmie Simpson Park?

An. Toward the end of March the Artists’ Network will make available to all artists accepted to show during the Riverdale Art Walk, and wish to show in a retail space along Queen Street a list of vendors who have agreed to host an artist for the weekend. On that list will be a description of the venue and what medium the vendor would prefer so that you can judge which one will be receptive to your work. You will need to speak to the vendors and find out about their space so that you can determine if they will be a good fit for you. You may also, find your own vendor in the designated area of the RAW. We will assist you wherever possible.

2.      Q. Do I have to be at the venue for the entire weekend?

An. YES! It is what you have agreed to do by submitting to the Riverdale Art Walk, and signing the contract. You agree to be accessible to potential clients of your work. No one else is going to sell your work. Do not expect the retail vendors to sell your art work when they have their own merchandise to sell. The patrons come to see the work and speak with the artists, and that is a key factor of the event.

3.      Q. If I show in the park what other costs are there?

An. There are no other Artists’ Network or RAW artist fees but there are exhibition costs artists might need to consider:
You will need a white tent which can be purchased or rented. You can most likely get one from Costco for around $250.00.
You will need a hanging system and weights which could range from as little as $50.00 to a few hundred dollars. If you are going to do many out door shows it is a cost that will pay for itself and is certainly less expensive than renting every time.
You can rent tents through Absolute, which can be convenient they will put up and take down the tent and can also provide.
If you are showing in the park, a retail space or your own studio you need to have business cards printed. It is recommended that you have at least 500 cards to give out and this may cost you $50.00 to $100.00 depending on the printer. If you are taking the step to show your work at the various outdoor shows then this is a capital cost and an investment in your art career.

4.      Q. What happens if it rains?

An. The RAW is a rain or shine event and your are expected to be there regardless of the weather. Some artists have commented that their best day was the day it rained heavily. Those who are out there are serious so take advantage of it.

Be sure to bring plastic sheeting to protect your art – you can buy rolls of this at Home Depot. If you own your tent, it’s also a good idea to apply seam sealer to your canopy as that’s where water usually makes it through. Camping supply stores like Mountain Equipment Co-op and Europe Bound carry this. If you own your tent, it’s also a good idea to apply seam sealer to your canopy as that’s where water usually makes it through. Camping supply stores like Mountain Equipment Co-op and Europe Bound carry this.

5.      Q. When can we expect to get information about loading in and out for the weekend?

An. In April you will get an Artist Package with information, the contract, load in times for your booth number, a form for tent rentals and anything else that we need to provide to you. We will also have two information sessions at the end of April and beginning of May to answer any of your questions.

6.      Do I need to remove my art on Saturday night?

An. Although we hire a security firm to patrol the grounds, they, the Riverdale Art Walk, or the Artists’ Network is not responsible for any loss, theft, or damage to any property that you leave overnight. It is highly recommended that you remove your art work and anything of value from your tent if you are showing in the park.

Those of you in retail venues need to work out overnight arrangements with your vendor. It is highly unlikely that you will need to remove your artwork for the retail space Saturday night.

7.      Q. How many people come to the Riverdale Art Walk?

An. It is estimated that approximately 10,000 people attend the RAW weekend. We are looking at programming for the weekend which will hopefully increase these numbers. This is the first outdoor art show of the season and usually proves to be a well attended event.

8.      Q. What advertising is done for the event?

An. The Artists’ Network has produced a catalogue through NOW Magazine for the Riverdale Art Walk. All artists are represented in this catalogue as are galleries, restaurants and other venues that might be of interest. The catalogue is distributed in NOW’s Hot Summer Guide which is publishedthe Thursday before the RAW weekend. NOW estimates that approximately 400,000 people see this catalogue. Two sizeable print ads will also run in issues of NOW prior to the RAW.

In addition to magazine advertising, we are planning to also target key residential areas through direct marketing. This has proven helpful in the past. Media kits will be sent to television, radio and print outlets at the beginning of April and May with a follow-up two weeks prior to the event. Public Service Announcements will also be utilised to gain exposure for the event. A poster campaign along Queen Street is also planned.

To help artists promote their attendance in the RAW, a web banner will be available on the Artist’s Network website for download for inclusion on artist’s websites informing your clients of the event.  An e-vite will also be provided for your email campaigns.

This year we are seeking the involvement of the community and merchants along Queen Street to emphasize the neighbourhood and the many shops, restaurants, bars and art galleries located in the area.

9.      Q. How can I contact you to ask further questions?

An. You can email artistsnetworkevents@gmail.com to ask any further questions. You should know if you have been accepted by the beginning of April. We will email you with the result of the jury.

10. Q. Can I appeal the result of the jury?

An. The decision of the jury is final and there is no means to appeal.
This year the jury was made up of nancy Grenier from Rouge Concepts, Stephen Schwartz from Engine Gallery and  Alan Norton formerly of Gaza du Montreal.

Dear Friends and Neighbours.

Many of you are aware of the Riverdale Art Walk (RAW) which will be held June 5th and 6th this year. For those of you who are not familiar with the RAW it is a wonderful community event. This year we are attempting to incorporate greater community involvement. Though the RAW has been traditionally focused on visual arts, with visual artists exhibiting in Jimmie Simpson Park, their own studios and in retail spaces on Queen Street, we also want to bring awareness to the Art of Food, Clothing, Furniture etc. in our vibrant neighbourhood.

Those of you who have been in the area for some time, know that this is the twelfth RAW and we have succeeded to have an attendance of between ten to twelve thousand people over the weekend. This gives you the opportunity to promote your business.

We are currently recruiting retail vendors who are willing to host an artist for the weekend. The RAW catalogue is distributed in NOW Magazines Hot Summer Issue would be a great way for you to boost your advertising. We are going to indicate on the map all galleries in the area. You too can be included. We would like to also put together “Walks” or self-guided tours of the RAW which would include good places to have brunch, lunch, a snack or diner. Ideally we would love to promote a concept such as RAWlicious, but this may have to wait until next year.

We remain open to different ways to include you in the RAW. I am attaching a sheet detailing ways you are able to be involved for this truly wonderful weekend. A frequently asked questions sheet and a form so that you can indicate to us how you will take advantage of this weekend. If you have any questions please contact myself or Olena Sullivan our RAW Administrator. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours truly

Painting

  • Karin Lapins
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone and one-on-one
    • Karin is a figurative painter from the Toronto area. Her work is about people that effect her in some personal way whether it be emotionally, politically or socially. She strives to achieve these feelings through colour and expression, expressing her work from an emotional perspective as oppose to an intellectual one. This has always been my her ultimate goal as a painter.

  • Ben Stansfield
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone and one-on-one
    • Born in Bermuda, Ben spent most of his childhood moving between Armed Forces bases once his family had moved back to Canada. He was heavily influenced by comic books, early 20th-century commercial illustration, sugary breakfast cereals and 1970s Saturday morning cartoons. He's been drawing for thirty eight years, painting for twelve, and has taught cartooning, colour theory, and materials for artists while living and painting full time in his studio in Toronto. His goal has been to move further into abstraction, concentrating on colour and line, and working toward a fluid, less structured method of painting. Horizon lines are still evident and important in his work, despite occasionally moving away from his landscapes and into more abstract work.

  • Lisa Ng
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible except April 26/28 and May 15; phone and studio visits
    • Lisa's work reflects the life she's chosen to live, the surroundings in which she lives in, and is greatly influenced by the people she come across. She's won awards such as the Artmichael Gallery Artist of the Year Award, the Small Business of the Month Award, a 3rd Place from the Junction Arts Festival, and severable Honorable Mentions. She has shown frequently in Toronto, most notably at The Sleeping Giant Gallery. In the 2010 RAW, her booth was quoted as the, “It Store of the Riverdale Art Walk.” This will be her first show of paintings after her recent creativity sharing strike and she be featuring a $1 painting depicting things you could generally get for a dollar. Packed with intrinsic value, it will be a real bargain for just $1. The sale of the work will begin on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at 1pm.

  • Rosemarie Armstrong
    • Location: Shelburne, Ontario
    • Availability: flexible by appointment
    • Having painted for several decades, Rosemarie is comfortably established as an artist. When she chooses to paint a certain subject or scene, she does so because she feels moved to paint it. People who fall in love with one of her canvases seem to relate to the subject matter, colour, and composition. Her canvases represent what existed in the times before Toronto and the GTA evolved into a metropolis. In 2008, she created a painting depicting the fence/entrance to a farmer's field located just north of Brampton on Kennedy Road - Farmer's Paradise - with the hot summer sun burning golden on the hay bales. Now this very same landscape lies beneath the tarmac of Hwy 410 & Hwy 10. Residents of Toronto and beyond who attend the Art Walk will be introduced to a wide variety of styles and subjects in her nature and rural heritage canvasses.

  • Scott Brewster
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: after 6pm
    • Scott Brewster lives in Toronto, Ontario. His art journey first started on the childhood walls of his bedroom (much to his mother’s delight), and continued through studies at various art schools, night courses, and many hours spent at the drafting board. He helped pay his way through post secondary school by designing t-shirts and logos. Scott always seems to have a pencil and pad handy for sketching during his free time. It wasn’t until one hot summer in Prince Edward Island that he thought to switch his pencil for a brush, and try his skill at painting. Scott works out of ‘The Work Shop Gallery’ in East York, Ontario, and from his little studio oasis at home. When he is not painting he is riding his motorcycle along the back roads of rural Ontario: gathering inspiration and ideas on the open road.

  • Moshe Mikanovsky
    • Location: Thornhill
    • Availability: flexible; phone and one-on-one
    • This is Moshe's first time not only at the RAW but also as a participant at an art fair. His watercolour paintings are mostly inspired by Jewish themes, but in a contemporary way, with his unique style of using a grid-work to define and redefine the subject matter. He is also very involved in marketing his art online through his art blog, website, and Twitter. He is a regular contributor to FineArtViews and has also written several articles for a local newspaper in Hebrew. His background in technology and high tech also helps him with Social Media marketing, as well as building websites for other artists.

  • Joan Metcalfe
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: M-Th before 3pm, Sat & Sun; phone or home studio
    • Graduating with a combined degree in Fine Arts and Psychology, Joan Metcalfe only returned to pursuing her passion of painting about seven years ago. This award-winning Artist has displayed and sold her art through private studio shows, galleries, as well as group shows through participation in local art associations. There is a uniqueness to her art in that her chosen medium is bright pastels and would describe her style as somewhere between realism and impressionism. Her inspiration comes from being personally involved in other artistic endeavors such as music and dance. She loves to teach children and regularly runs children’s art classes during the summer. One of the pieces, a group project called “Spring Flowers”, was sold to an international collector. Joan regularly contributes her pieces to local fund-raising project having been involved with the Claude Watson School for the Performing Arts and the Sanfilippo Children’s Research Foundation.

  • Zina Chmielowski
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone or one-on-one
    • Zina Chmielowski immigrated to Canada from Eastern Europe in 1982, leaving behind a difficult and stifling political world and arriving with only a suitcase in one hand and her young daughter holding the other. Having spent her life to that point dedicated to her study of fine art, design, and literature, she was committed to continuing this study upon arriving in Toronto, Canada. She enrolled almost immediately at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Since completing the Communication and Design Program, Zina persisted in developing her career and talent through a wide range of professional experience, often aware, however, that the struggle of raising a child on her own steered her focus to making a living, and less toward the simple enjoyment and exploration of her passion. In the past couple of years Zina has refocused herself and become more engaged in her initial love - painting. She has rediscovered herself as an artist and is very excited about emerging into this new phase of creation. Although she has a love for visual art generally, abstract painting is her true favourite method of artistic expression and emotional fulfillment.

  • Greg Ellwand
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone or one-on-one
    • A Dora Mavor Award winner, Greg is new to the art world, although he is no stranger to a life in the arts and its delirious highs to the groveling lows. He studied at the Central Technical School for a short time but is untried, untested and untrained - a combination that shows rather boldly in his paintings. His passion for his art is what drives him to constantly paint - painting his mind, painting his room, and painting the paint. Although he has sketched and fiddled about with art stuff most of his adult life, the Riverdale Art Walk marks the very first time he has ever shown his art publicly. He and his wife have been through a hundred darknesses in pursuit of their art for 30 years, and he is still totally, madly and completely swept away by the magic of it.

  • Jeffrey Chong Wang
    • Location: New York
    • Availability: will be in Toronto May 25; one-on-one
    • Jeffrey Chong Wang has a M.F.A. degree from New York Art Academy, and he took his B.F.A. degree from Ontario College of Art & Design, through which he spent a year in Florence, Italy and was influence by the Renaissance style. He also received a scholarship from N.Y.A.A. to go to Normandy, France to participate in the Prince of Wales Drawing Institute. His work attempts to blend western oil painting techniques with contemporary themes of eastern culture and his paintings have been collected by Christopher ‘Kip’ Forbes and the Prince of Wales. As a young artist, Jeffrey exhibited at Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, winning a student Honorable Mention in 2008, and was invited to participate in the Best of 2008 at F.C.P. Gallery in First Canadian Place. He also participated in the Queen West Art Crawl in 2009, receiving 2nd prize Audience Choice Award. Jeffrey has exhibited widely including Tribeca Ball, New York; a solo show at Campbell House Museum, Toronto; and other galleries. This is Jeffrey’s third year at Riverdale Art Walk.

Photography

  • Chris Hutcheson
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone and one-on-one
    • Chris is interested in images of places at rest - for a season, or at the end of their useful lives. These places, once active, are now silent, often ignored, and isolated, even in busy surroundings. Their presence is often a surprise to me; something happened on rather than looked for. Most of his work is based in the Toronto, Prince Edward, Gray-Bruce area. He shoots with old wooden cameras and film panoramic cameras as well as new digital ones. With an eye on the environment, he prints his own work, but times it to take advantage of reduce hydro rates in the evening and uses archival quality fine art papers such as MOAB papers, which are produced using wind power. Two years ago he won a Corporate Purchase Award at the Artist Project. This is Chris' third year at the RAW.

  • Toni Wallachy
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: M/Th/Fri & weekends; phone
    • Toni is influenced, inspired and somehow affected by the Urban Landscape around me—the collective energy in a room, the persona of a country where I'm traveling or living, by the mood of another person or the natural world that surrounds me. I feel as an explorer, searching for those moments when I get an instinctive response to what I am looking at. Observations of the same scenery repeatedly over time, the play of light in different conditions, will eventually render the ordinary, extraordinary. Toni's exhibit at this year's RAW - Bubble Gum Tear Drops: There's nothing wrong with me a little ice cream won't fix - is inspired by bucket after bucket of delicious colourful inspiration teasing our senses every time we walk into an ice cream shop, each tagged with juicy names and sweet luscious smells.

  • Ruth Gillson
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: Evening of weekends for one-on-one, phone during week
    • Ruth Gillson has shot stills for National Film Board documentaries, including ‘A Joy of Singing’ (1983), about Claude Corbeil and Maureen Forrester teaching master voice classes in China. Her photographs have appeared in NFB promotional material and magazines. Recently, Ruth has shown her work at Contact 2009, where her images were noted by Toronto Life as one of fifty best bets, the Dominion on Queen, Toronto Image Works, Gallery DK, the Little Art Show, Hang Man Gallery, Queen West Art Crawl, AWOL Gallery and the Riverdale Art Walk. Ruth is a member of the Artist’s Network, Artists Toronto and Hangman 7 (group of seven Artist Network photographers exploring urban images). Ruth is a traditionalist, using existing natural light, little environmental manipulation, and the full negative, whether in film or digital. She believes the composition of a photograph is decided at the time the photograph is taken, which, to her, is the true photographic experience. What the audience sees is what attracted Ruth to capture the image in the first place.

  • Evan Tyler
    • Location: Regina, Saskatchewan
    • Availability: Will be in Toronto the week before RAW
    • Evan Tyler is an emerging intermedia artist working in photography, video, drawing and performance. His work often incorporates performative public interventions that disturb the notion of the everyday, manifesting a spectacle in various social and urban spaces. Although the end result of these spectacles is often translated through lens-based media, Tyler's performative engagement and interactive process in urban space is at the core of his practice. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Evan Tyler became interested in rapping and street art at a young age. For almost a decade he has been crafting experimental hip hop projects, pushing the envelope for progressive lyricism. The Fine Arts Program at the University of Regina honed his multi-media practice and in 2008 he earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA), majoring in Intermedia. Tyler has exhibited his work at the Godfrey Dean Gallery, Yorkton, Sask. (2010), galleryDK, Toronto (2010), the University Club, Regina, Sask (2009) and the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Regina, Sask. (2007).

Drawing

  • M-J Kelley
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone, on-on-one
    • M-J Kelley is a classically-trained artist with more than 20 years of experience and the owner of M-J Kelley Studio. Her work focuses on hand-drawn fine art, comic art and illustration, and has ranged from commercial storyboarding and figurative portraiture, to large-scale murals and set design. M-J’s current body of work blends hand-drawn imagery with imaginative and classical sight skills to depict the natural world and the growth capable within it. These creations contain engaging anthropomorphic forms animated in unusual and yet natural environments. They are living entities that offer whimsical change, movement and interaction. They are depicted with gouache on board. This is M-J’s first time exhibiting at RAW.

Mixed Media

  • Matt Durant
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone, on-on-one
    • Combining the chaotic lines of urban culture with distressed organic materials, Matt Durant’s mixed media works bring eco sensibility to images of the modern metropolis. His dynamic, interdisciplinary style draws from music, sculpture and action painting. Durant graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design in 2001, where he studied an array of medium, his later years focusing woodworking, video, and audio sculpture. This training would later come to inform his painting; his energetic op-art patterns resemble a tangle of furiously oscillating sinusoidal waves. Years of work as a horticulturalist influence his choice of materials, which favour salvaged wood and found objects that would otherwise have been discard. In utilizing so-called refuse, Durant probes ecological themes while drawing inspiration from the timeworn character of a derelict picnic table or a second hand film gels book, for example. Starting from the natural grain, knots and crags of wood, Durant builds a richly textured surface. He applies his own stains and diluted paints—both oil and acrylic—to fibrous wood slabs in energetic, gestural strokes. Hands, brushes, palette knives and found objects are the vehicles in the drip-and-splatter technique, which relies on both conscious direction and happy accident. This Abstract Expressionist foundation is punctuated with a hard, graphic line, applied with a unique squirting technique. The resulting silhouettes, often reminiscent of urban skylines, resembles stylized graffiti. The contrast between this bold stencil and the underlying wood grain suggests themes of urban sprawl and deforestation, decay and nostalgia.

  • Susan Wallis
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: flexible; phone, on-on-one
    • A graduate from the University of Toronto with a BA in Fine Art History and Studio Art, Susan worked in the design/build field for many years returning to her art in 2003 thanks to the Riverdale Art Walk. Now, as a full-time working encaustic artist she will be participating in the Art Walk for the 7th time. Her studio is one of the only artist's studios on the RAW map located on Carlaw Ave. Thanks to the launching pad of the walk she is now shown in galleries across Canada and her work is collected internationally. Susan works in encaustic, an ancient medium that combines molten wax with pigment. Her primary muse is the Canadian landscape, especially the bucolic landscape of Prince Edward County, Ontario where she resides part-time and has a second studio.

Sculpture

  • J.A. Fligel
    • Location: Toronto
    • Availability: Wed & Thurs after 6pm, weekends
    • Born in Scotland in 1966 to a family of artists - his father studied under Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven and his mother was a recognized artist and dedicated peace and human rights activist - J.A. Fligel has sculpted ever since he remembers, and it’s been natural for him to pursue this interest. After graduating with a B.A Honors Degree in Fine Art, he worked in the art department of Upper Springlands, helping adults with special needs. From 1992, he exhibited, traveled and worked with interior designers all over the world. Some of his work found permanent homes in locations as different as Perth, Scotland, and The Awapuni Hotel in New Zealand. Subsequently, J.A. Fligel worked on many theatre and film productions in Australia and Canada. These included the Lion King, Nut Cracker, Phantom Of The Opera, Rag Time, Sunset Boulevard, Tommy, Famous Peoples Players and many more productions. J.A. Fligel’s career started with abstract sculpture, however, through his travels he was inspired by the human expression and gravitated toward figurative sculpture. J.A. Fligel settled in Canada in 2001, where he works presently. He was honored to have participated at the 2009 Florence Biennale, Italy, representing Canada. Resent sculptures include Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes. These sculptures were exhibited in the Canadian Olympic Athletes Dialogue in Art exhibition through the Portrait Society of Canada. His goal is to show how much we have and how much more we all could have by working together for a joint goal of peace, love and caring. Through his sculpture he encourage people to see basic values and the magnificence and strength of humanity and nature.

Story Ideas

JON MULDOON
Photographing Toronto's missing waters

When he's not at his staff job as a photographer at a community newspaper, this year's Jury's Choice winner Jon Muldoon is busy lifting manhole covers to see what's underneath. As an underground photographer, he explores the rivers, streams, and creeks that once flowed through Toronto and southern Ontario that have been removed not only from the map, but seemingly from reality. Many of these missing waters still flow underground in dark brick and concrete tunnels, some functioning to keep rain water out of local basements, some left unused other than to store overflow during storms, and others, such as Toronto's celebrated Garrison Creek, acting as sewers a century since they were buried out of sight and out of mind. By shining a light on these buried waterways he challenges his viewers to question their concepts of progress and development, and to consider the many ways Toronto water is used, moved, and manipulated, for better or for worse.

EVERYTHING OLD IS ART AGAIN
Artists rePAINT, reSHOOT, and reSCULPT to green their art

How green is the artwork you buy? Do today's artists repurpose and recycle their materials to minimize their artistic footprint? Can we as artists turn this process of Creation into reCreation and find ways to incorporate the old into the new? This year's RAW Members' Theme Show challenges our artists to explore beyond their familiar toolbox and experiment with a green theme of recycling as inspiration - using recycled, restored, reconstructed, and reclaimed materials in the content and production of their pieces. Printing on recycled paper, using recycled or salvaged glass and wood in framing, and creating art from reused objects are not only an innovative use of existing materials, but an important change in the creative process as we strive for a greener Toronto. This 3-week juried exhibit runs in conjunction with the Riverdale Art Walk at the Hang Man Gallery, 756 Queen St. E., Toronto.

RAW 2009

Thank you to the RAW committee, volunteers, artists and business for supporting the 11th annual Riverdale Art Walk

June 6 & 7 2009

We’re gearing up for the 11th annual Riverdale Art Walk, and we’re excited...

The Riverdale Art Walk is a 2-day, juried fine art show, with artists showing indoors AND outdoors.

This year we’re featuring:

  • June 3rd - Movie Night at the FOX Theatre in the Beaches
  • June 4th- Official RAW launch Party at Hang Man Gallery, 756 Queen Street East, everyone is welcome
  • June 6th & 7th- The Riverdale Art Walk including a Steam Whistle beer tent, self guided Carlaw Avenue Studio Tour, Live Music, Children’s Activities, Food and Drinks, The Artists’ Network Members Show and of course 100 of the best artists in Ontario.

Exhibition Areas
This years route will run along Queen Street East, from Broadview to Carlaw St, and Carlaw St. North to Dundas.

Artists can exhibit in any retail space, or private studio along the route or in Jimmie Simpson Park. The Riverdale Art Walk is easily accessible by the TTC, driving or by bike. The exhibition area is marked with blue.

Artists’ Network Members show!

The members show is being held in tandem with the Riverdale Art Walk

Our theme this year is 11, eleven, or doubles. This event is our way of showcasing our members within the RAW even if they are not exhibiting in the Riverdale Art Walk. All artists are members of the Artists' Network and works include sculpture, drawing and painting!

The Hang Man gallery will serve as home base for the Riverdale Art Walk and the members show will run for 3 weeks (June 2nd to 21st 2009). Furthermore, the media launch for RAW and the opening for the members show will be held simultaneously at the Hang Man on June 4th 2009. We look forward to seeing you there!

RAW 2010 Event Gallery

The 2010 Riverdale Art Walk was a huge success and we thank all our participating artists, sponsors, volunteers, community groups, vendors, and members of the Artists' Network who put so much time and effort into the event this year. If you didn't get a chance to meet your artist neighbours in the park, our volunteer photographer Timothy Neesam shot these wonderful "Portraits In The Park" during the RAW weekend.
