Riverdale Art Walk, June 5th and 6th 2010
Please contact Olena Sullivan, RAW Administrator, regarding contact information for the artists listed below. There is a wide variety of artists available in painting, photography, drawing, mixed media, and sculpture.
Karin is a figurative painter from the Toronto area. Her work is about people that effect her in some personal way whether it be emotionally, politically or socially. She strives to achieve these feelings through colour and expression, expressing her work from an emotional perspective as oppose to an intellectual one. This has always been my her ultimate goal as a painter.
Born in Bermuda, Ben spent most of his childhood moving between Armed Forces bases once his family had moved back to Canada. He was heavily influenced by comic books, early 20th-century commercial illustration, sugary breakfast cereals and 1970s Saturday morning cartoons. He's been drawing for thirty eight years, painting for twelve, and has taught cartooning, colour theory, and materials for artists while living and painting full time in his studio in Toronto. His goal has been to move further into abstraction, concentrating on colour and line, and working toward a fluid, less structured method of painting. Horizon lines are still evident and important in his work, despite occasionally moving away from his landscapes and into more abstract work.
Lisa's work reflects the life she's chosen to live, the surroundings in which she lives in, and is greatly influenced by the people she come across. She's won awards such as the Artmichael Gallery Artist of the Year Award, the Small Business of the Month Award, a 3rd Place from the Junction Arts Festival, and severable Honorable Mentions. She has shown frequently in Toronto, most notably at The Sleeping Giant Gallery. In the 2010 RAW, her booth was quoted as the, “It Store of the Riverdale Art Walk.” This will be her first show of paintings after her recent creativity sharing strike and she be featuring a $1 painting depicting things you could generally get for a dollar. Packed with intrinsic value, it will be a real bargain for just $1. The sale of the work will begin on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at 1pm.
Having painted for several decades, Rosemarie is comfortably established as an artist. When she chooses to paint a certain subject or scene, she does so because she feels moved to paint it. People who fall in love with one of her canvases seem to relate to the subject matter, colour, and composition. Her canvases represent what existed in the times before Toronto and the GTA evolved into a metropolis. In 2008, she created a painting depicting the fence/entrance to a farmer's field located just north of Brampton on Kennedy Road - Farmer's Paradise - with the hot summer sun burning golden on the hay bales. Now this very same landscape lies beneath the tarmac of Hwy 410 & Hwy 10. Residents of Toronto and beyond who attend the Art Walk will be introduced to a wide variety of styles and subjects in her nature and rural heritage canvasses.
Scott Brewster lives in Toronto, Ontario. His art journey first started on the childhood walls of his bedroom (much to his mother’s delight), and continued through studies at various art schools, night courses, and many hours spent at the drafting board. He helped pay his way through post secondary school by designing t-shirts and logos. Scott always seems to have a pencil and pad handy for sketching during his free time. It wasn’t until one hot summer in Prince Edward Island that he thought to switch his pencil for a brush, and try his skill at painting. Scott works out of ‘The Work Shop Gallery’ in East York, Ontario, and from his little studio oasis at home. When he is not painting he is riding his motorcycle along the back roads of rural Ontario: gathering inspiration and ideas on the open road.
This is Moshe's first time not only at the RAW but also as a participant at an art fair. His watercolour paintings are mostly inspired by Jewish themes, but in a contemporary way, with his unique style of using a grid-work to define and redefine the subject matter. He is also very involved in marketing his art online through his art blog, website, and Twitter. He is a regular contributor to FineArtViews and has also written several articles for a local newspaper in Hebrew. His background in technology and high tech also helps him with Social Media marketing, as well as building websites for other artists.
Graduating with a combined degree in Fine Arts and Psychology, Joan Metcalfe only returned to pursuing her passion of painting about seven years ago. This award-winning Artist has displayed and sold her art through private studio shows, galleries, as well as group shows through participation in local art associations. There is a uniqueness to her art in that her chosen medium is bright pastels and would describe her style as somewhere between realism and impressionism. Her inspiration comes from being personally involved in other artistic endeavors such as music and dance. She loves to teach children and regularly runs children’s art classes during the summer. One of the pieces, a group project called “Spring Flowers”, was sold to an international collector. Joan regularly contributes her pieces to local fund-raising project having been involved with the Claude Watson School for the Performing Arts and the Sanfilippo Children’s Research Foundation.
Zina Chmielowski immigrated to Canada from Eastern Europe in 1982, leaving behind a difficult and stifling political world and arriving with only a suitcase in one hand and her young daughter holding the other. Having spent her life to that point dedicated to her study of fine art, design, and literature, she was committed to continuing this study upon arriving in Toronto, Canada. She enrolled almost immediately at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Since completing the Communication and Design Program, Zina persisted in developing her career and talent through a wide range of professional experience, often aware, however, that the struggle of raising a child on her own steered her focus to making a living, and less toward the simple enjoyment and exploration of her passion. In the past couple of years Zina has refocused herself and become more engaged in her initial love - painting. She has rediscovered herself as an artist and is very excited about emerging into this new phase of creation. Although she has a love for visual art generally, abstract painting is her true favourite method of artistic expression and emotional fulfillment.
A Dora Mavor Award winner, Greg is new to the art world, although he is no stranger to a life in the arts and its delirious highs to the groveling lows. He studied at the Central Technical School for a short time but is untried, untested and untrained - a combination that shows rather boldly in his paintings. His passion for his art is what drives him to constantly paint - painting his mind, painting his room, and painting the paint. Although he has sketched and fiddled about with art stuff most of his adult life, the Riverdale Art Walk marks the very first time he has ever shown his art publicly. He and his wife have been through a hundred darknesses in pursuit of their art for 30 years, and he is still totally, madly and completely swept away by the magic of it.
Jeffrey Chong Wang has a M.F.A. degree from New York Art Academy, and he took his B.F.A. degree from Ontario College of Art & Design, through which he spent a year in Florence, Italy and was influence by the Renaissance style. He also received a scholarship from N.Y.A.A. to go to Normandy, France to participate in the Prince of Wales Drawing Institute. His work attempts to blend western oil painting techniques with contemporary themes of eastern culture and his paintings have been collected by Christopher ‘Kip’ Forbes and the Prince of Wales. As a young artist, Jeffrey exhibited at Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, winning a student Honorable Mention in 2008, and was invited to participate in the Best of 2008 at F.C.P. Gallery in First Canadian Place. He also participated in the Queen West Art Crawl in 2009, receiving 2nd prize Audience Choice Award. Jeffrey has exhibited widely including Tribeca Ball, New York; a solo show at Campbell House Museum, Toronto; and other galleries. This is Jeffrey’s third year at Riverdale Art Walk.
Chris is interested in images of places at rest - for a season, or at the end of their useful lives. These places, once active, are now silent, often ignored, and isolated, even in busy surroundings. Their presence is often a surprise to me; something happened on rather than looked for. Most of his work is based in the Toronto, Prince Edward, Gray-Bruce area. He shoots with old wooden cameras and film panoramic cameras as well as new digital ones. With an eye on the environment, he prints his own work, but times it to take advantage of reduce hydro rates in the evening and uses archival quality fine art papers such as MOAB papers, which are produced using wind power. Two years ago he won a Corporate Purchase Award at the Artist Project. This is Chris' third year at the RAW.
Toni is influenced, inspired and somehow affected by the Urban Landscape around me—the collective energy in a room, the persona of a country where I'm traveling or living, by the mood of another person or the natural world that surrounds me. I feel as an explorer, searching for those moments when I get an instinctive response to what I am looking at. Observations of the same scenery repeatedly over time, the play of light in different conditions, will eventually render the ordinary, extraordinary. Toni's exhibit at this year's RAW - Bubble Gum Tear Drops: There's nothing wrong with me a little ice cream won't fix - is inspired by bucket after bucket of delicious colourful inspiration teasing our senses every time we walk into an ice cream shop, each tagged with juicy names and sweet luscious smells.
Ruth Gillson has shot stills for National Film Board documentaries, including ‘A Joy of Singing’ (1983), about Claude Corbeil and Maureen Forrester teaching master voice classes in China. Her photographs have appeared in NFB promotional material and magazines. Recently, Ruth has shown her work at Contact 2009, where her images were noted by Toronto Life as one of fifty best bets, the Dominion on Queen, Toronto Image Works, Gallery DK, the Little Art Show, Hang Man Gallery, Queen West Art Crawl, AWOL Gallery and the Riverdale Art Walk. Ruth is a member of the Artist’s Network, Artists Toronto and Hangman 7 (group of seven Artist Network photographers exploring urban images). Ruth is a traditionalist, using existing natural light, little environmental manipulation, and the full negative, whether in film or digital. She believes the composition of a photograph is decided at the time the photograph is taken, which, to her, is the true photographic experience. What the audience sees is what attracted Ruth to capture the image in the first place.
Evan Tyler is an emerging intermedia artist working in photography, video, drawing and performance. His work often incorporates performative public interventions that disturb the notion of the everyday, manifesting a spectacle in various social and urban spaces. Although the end result of these spectacles is often translated through lens-based media, Tyler's performative engagement and interactive process in urban space is at the core of his practice. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Evan Tyler became interested in rapping and street art at a young age. For almost a decade he has been crafting experimental hip hop projects, pushing the envelope for progressive lyricism. The Fine Arts Program at the University of Regina honed his multi-media practice and in 2008 he earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA), majoring in Intermedia. Tyler has exhibited his work at the Godfrey Dean Gallery, Yorkton, Sask. (2010), galleryDK, Toronto (2010), the University Club, Regina, Sask (2009) and the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Regina, Sask. (2007).
M-J Kelley is a classically-trained artist with more than 20 years of experience and the owner of M-J Kelley Studio. Her work focuses on hand-drawn fine art, comic art and illustration, and has ranged from commercial storyboarding and figurative portraiture, to large-scale murals and set design. M-J’s current body of work blends hand-drawn imagery with imaginative and classical sight skills to depict the natural world and the growth capable within it. These creations contain engaging anthropomorphic forms animated in unusual and yet natural environments. They are living entities that offer whimsical change, movement and interaction. They are depicted with gouache on board. This is M-J’s first time exhibiting at RAW.
Combining the chaotic lines of urban culture with distressed organic materials, Matt Durant’s mixed media works bring eco sensibility to images of the modern metropolis. His dynamic, interdisciplinary style draws from music, sculpture and action painting. Durant graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design in 2001, where he studied an array of medium, his later years focusing woodworking, video, and audio sculpture. This training would later come to inform his painting; his energetic op-art patterns resemble a tangle of furiously oscillating sinusoidal waves. Years of work as a horticulturalist influence his choice of materials, which favour salvaged wood and found objects that would otherwise have been discard. In utilizing so-called refuse, Durant probes ecological themes while drawing inspiration from the timeworn character of a derelict picnic table or a second hand film gels book, for example. Starting from the natural grain, knots and crags of wood, Durant builds a richly textured surface. He applies his own stains and diluted paints—both oil and acrylic—to fibrous wood slabs in energetic, gestural strokes. Hands, brushes, palette knives and found objects are the vehicles in the drip-and-splatter technique, which relies on both conscious direction and happy accident. This Abstract Expressionist foundation is punctuated with a hard, graphic line, applied with a unique squirting technique. The resulting silhouettes, often reminiscent of urban skylines, resembles stylized graffiti. The contrast between this bold stencil and the underlying wood grain suggests themes of urban sprawl and deforestation, decay and nostalgia.
A graduate from the University of Toronto with a BA in Fine Art History and Studio Art, Susan worked in the design/build field for many years returning to her art in 2003 thanks to the Riverdale Art Walk. Now, as a full-time working encaustic artist she will be participating in the Art Walk for the 7th time. Her studio is one of the only artist's studios on the RAW map located on Carlaw Ave. Thanks to the launching pad of the walk she is now shown in galleries across Canada and her work is collected internationally. Susan works in encaustic, an ancient medium that combines molten wax with pigment. Her primary muse is the Canadian landscape, especially the bucolic landscape of Prince Edward County, Ontario where she resides part-time and has a second studio.
Born in Scotland in 1966 to a family of artists - his father studied under Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven and his mother was a recognized artist and dedicated peace and human rights activist - J.A. Fligel has sculpted ever since he remembers, and it’s been natural for him to pursue this interest. After graduating with a B.A Honors Degree in Fine Art, he worked in the art department of Upper Springlands, helping adults with special needs. From 1992, he exhibited, traveled and worked with interior designers all over the world. Some of his work found permanent homes in locations as different as Perth, Scotland, and The Awapuni Hotel in New Zealand. Subsequently, J.A. Fligel worked on many theatre and film productions in Australia and Canada. These included the Lion King, Nut Cracker, Phantom Of The Opera, Rag Time, Sunset Boulevard, Tommy, Famous Peoples Players and many more productions. J.A. Fligel’s career started with abstract sculpture, however, through his travels he was inspired by the human expression and gravitated toward figurative sculpture. J.A. Fligel settled in Canada in 2001, where he works presently. He was honored to have participated at the 2009 Florence Biennale, Italy, representing Canada. Resent sculptures include Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes. These sculptures were exhibited in the Canadian Olympic Athletes Dialogue in Art exhibition through the Portrait Society of Canada. His goal is to show how much we have and how much more we all could have by working together for a joint goal of peace, love and caring. Through his sculpture he encourage people to see basic values and the magnificence and strength of humanity and nature.

When he's not at his staff job as a photographer at a community newspaper, this year's Jury's Choice winner Jon Muldoon is busy lifting manhole covers to see what's underneath. As an underground photographer, he explores the rivers, streams, and creeks that once flowed through Toronto and southern Ontario that have been removed not only from the map, but seemingly from reality. Many of these missing waters still flow underground in dark brick and concrete tunnels, some functioning to keep rain water out of local basements, some left unused other than to store overflow during storms, and others, such as Toronto's celebrated Garrison Creek, acting as sewers a century since they were buried out of sight and out of mind. By shining a light on these buried waterways he challenges his viewers to question their concepts of progress and development, and to consider the many ways Toronto water is used, moved, and manipulated, for better or for worse.
How green is the artwork you buy? Do today's artists repurpose and recycle their materials to minimize their artistic footprint? Can we as artists turn this process of Creation into reCreation and find ways to incorporate the old into the new? This year's RAW Members' Theme Show challenges our artists to explore beyond their familiar toolbox and experiment with a green theme of recycling as inspiration - using recycled, restored, reconstructed, and reclaimed materials in the content and production of their pieces. Printing on recycled paper, using recycled or salvaged glass and wood in framing, and creating art from reused objects are not only an innovative use of existing materials, but an important change in the creative process as we strive for a greener Toronto. This 3-week juried exhibit runs in conjunction with the Riverdale Art Walk at the Hang Man Gallery, 756 Queen St. E., Toronto.
