Network News
There are some issues I wish to address and these are really in response to several inquiries from more than a few members.
First, this summer there is a grant that is being distributed by the City of Toronto to various Business Improvement Associations for the purposes of store-front renovations. Many of you have noted that our signage is dismal. I wholeheartedly agree. Since our acrylic sign broke a few weeks ago we have little presence on the street. We will be applying for this grant so that we can finally have a sign. Please be patient, we will be going forward with this is due time.
Second: Last year we had a Town Hall where you the members were able to have your say. The results of the Town Hall are on the web site, just follow the link below.
http://www.artistsnetwork.ca/node/174
Over the last six month I have addressed all of the items in the Town Hall. One of the major areas that you wished for improvement was Exhibition Opportunities. As many of you know we program the space for the Dominion on Queen, and we have the Members Salon here at Hang Man. I have tried to stir interest in getting a group together to show at both the Affordable Art Fair in NYC and the Toronto Art Expo. I now have a request for the Artists’ Network to program another space. I am a bit apprehensive of accepting this venue though it would be good for our membership and the organisation.
My apprehension stems from the fact that both the Affordable Art Fair and the Art Expo did not get the response I had hoped for, and to make it financially viable for our members. We are also having difficulty getting members to show in the Salon and at the Dominion. In light of this I am very tempted to turn down this opportunity.
My challenge to you all members is to show your work in a minimum of one venue this year. I see all members as having wonderful talents and as artists you have to share this talent and show your work. I encourage all of you to show at every possibility.
The Artists’ Network has the following Exhibition Opportunities Available:
Riverdale Art Walk, submission and jury process. June 5th and 6th. Deadline March 5th.
Salon in Hang Man, February 16th, and from July on.
Dominion on Queen, March, June July, August, October, November, December.
You can check for exhibition availability at http://www.artistsnetwork.ca/node/180
I am hoping that we can count on your support to fill these available spots. As professional artists I would encourage you to exhibit at every opportunity. Both the Salon and the Dominion are excellent venues to show your work. These are venues that are good for all levels of artists. It is far better to hang your work for people to see and enjoy than store it in a dark closet. Please submit to exhibit or we will be forced to scale back our exhibition opportunities rather than expand them. I would not like to do this.
Third: We are having record numbers in attendance at our Networking sessions and socials. I am encouraged at the level of involvement. I have met some very interesting people and enjoy chatting about your work and ideas. You know there is a “however” coming. Well the however is that as much as we have 20 to 25 people in attendance we are missing many of you. We need your involvement, your input, your ideas and energy. We need you to be part of this organisation and you have a great deal to give your fellow artists. I would really appreciate you coming out, contributing and taking something away from the Network. I hope to see you all at least one event this year.
Fourth: We had the first meeting of the new Board last month, and the second meeting is on the 8th. We have a group with diverse talents and a great deal to give. We have four committees in place. In addition to the Programming and Networking Committees, there is a new committee devoted to marketing and promotion. The fourth is a board committee related to leadership and governance. We are exploring new membership categories, events, and benefits. We are looking into the possibility of a health plan to offer you, the organisation of a conference to network with other arts service organisations, and forming relationships with others in the broader arts community. If we make the larger community strong then we help our self and our members. We will need your help going forward. Please respond generously.
Finally: The Bulletin will now be sent out at the beginning of the month (yes, sorry, I’m a bit late). You will receive periodical Personal Messages through the forum. The forum and website are great tools and we have spent a great deal of time developing content and making it something you can use and has value. There are notes on seminars, and the Bulletin will be uploaded to the forum as well. Many of you have yet to up date your profiles. This is a good tool for you to use to show your work and direct traffic to your website. I’m going to ask that since you have a link to your website on the network site, please put a link to the ArtistsNework.ca on your site. Get in the habit of checking the forum for information.

CAFKA 2011: Call for Proposals
September 16 - October 2, 2011
The Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area (CAFKA) is a unique, artist run, biennial visual art event in the City of Kitchener and Regional Municipality of Waterloo, in Ontario, Canada. CAFKA takes art out of the gallery and places it in civic spaces to engage the public and create new audiences for contemporary art.
CAFKA was born out of the desire of the local artist community to bring contemporary art to Kitchener’s downtown. As it has grown it has attracted interest from across Canada and internationally, with a history of exhibiting both emerging and established artists from around the world. Originally attached to the Kitchener City Hall, the event has moved outward to include storefronts, sidewalks, warehouses, concourses and parks in the city and has expanded to include our neighbouring municipalities. Always rooted in the community, CAFKA seeks artists who are able to respond to the specific features of the local urban landscape and culture as sites of critique and reflection from a global perspective.
CAFKA is inviting proposals for new or existing works that engage the public spaces in the Region of Waterloo. Works in all media will be considered including sculpture, performance, video, audio, installation, photography, painting, drawing and digital media. Video artists are also invited to submit single channel work to be considered for inclusion in our ongoing series of screenings.
Artist Fees paid for Visual and Media Art Projects: CAD $2,000, which is intended to cover all aspects of production & installation including materials and transportation. Wherever possible CAFKA will work with artists to source the donation of materials to help offset production costs. Video and one-time performance fees paid in accordance with CARFAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des Artistes Canadiens).
We encourage artists to use the online application, however a printable version of this form is available on our web site: http://www.cafka.org
ALL MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED BY 5:00 PM FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2010
