Artists statement:

Kersti Abawi - a bit of a bio.

I studied photography a long time ago at York University with Micheal Semak.  I shot my photos with a Pentax Spotmatic and developed them in a darkroom.  Today I use a Canon EOS digital SLR and love to use my computer as an electronic darkroom!

My work is about finding/remembering my place "in the family of things" (as the poet Mary Oliver put it).  It's about remembering again and again, the connections that exist between everything in the living world, beyond words.  In Zen, this is called primary point.

Through my photography, I shift from "me-identity", which is separate, to belonging again with the tree, rock, sky, water, moon, or droplets on a spider's web.  The feeling is expansive, all-inclusive.  I connect to the awareness of being embedded in the world.

I am also learning to express ideas using Photoshop and Painter. which give my imagination the freedom to morph my photos in any direction I please!

All of my photos are printed on acid-free photo paper, with an Epson Pro 3800 printer containing 8 individual pigment inks.  Pigment inks don't fade or decompose to any significant degree when exposed to UV light, and can last vivid up to 200 years.  This is because the coloured particles in pigment inks are inert, suspended in a neutral carrier liquid.  This is unlike water-soluble cyes that are organic compounds and deteriorate rapicly when exposed to UV light and other environmental factors.
